SOUND THERAPY For Healing
Just tuning in to the latest hits can relax, inspire or motivate you, but there are so many other ways that sound has been used throughout history as a healing modality. Here is a brief introduction to the wide variety of therapeutic applications of sound, and Jennifer meets with a New York based energetic healer who incorporates sound healing into her treatments.
In the middle ages, sacred vibrations in the form of sound were employed as a form of prayer in the powerful Gregorian chants, named after Pope Gregory the Great. An ancient, six tone scale that may be traced to these medieval chants, called the Solfeggio frequencies, is believed to impart spiritual blessing and healing. The mathematical resonances of original Solfeggio frequencies were thought to be capable of elevating ones connection to the Spiritual Divine. Documented results include improved relationships, release from feelings of guilt and shame, and they may also play a role in restoring DNA.
Tibetan singing bowls, made from both crystal and brass and played with a wooden mallet, produce unique, subtle tones that are used to focus attention, reduce stress and improve health. Indigenous tribes have long employed sacred drumming in spiritual and healing ceremonies, and Australian aborigines use the didgeridoo to invoke the sacred and alter consciousness. A research study known as ‘The Mozart Effect’ indicates that listening to this classical genius improves ones execution of certain mental tasks, including problem solving. Baroque classical music is thought to elevate ones mood and productivity.
Music has been compiled to enhance children’s learning abilities, as well as to calm animals. The sound of waterfalls and chimes are often used as an environmental relaxer. Tuning forks can be used for Chakra energy balancing. Mantras are used in meditation to raise your vibration, center and balance your energy. OM, the ancient Sanskrit seed mantra thought to contain all the power of the universe, was recorded by NASA, and interpreted by many, as a sound emanating from the Sun!
This is just a hint of the profound power therapeutic sound can have. Pay attention to the sounds that surround you and take notice of their effect.
Jennifer Interviews sound healer Stephanie Jaggers.
JA: Stephanie, what is your background in sound and healing?
SJ: I grew up singing and playing the piano and studied musical theatre at The Boston Conservatory. Shortly after graduating from college I became increasingly curious about healing and spirituality. When I trained at the Barbara Brenan School of Healing, I was introduced to tone healing, using the voice. Because of my background, combining tone healing with energy healing was natural and when I included sound in my healing, I always got very positive feedback.
Stephanie advises people to be mindful of what they listen to. If you find yourself drawn to a particular type of music at certain times that evokes feelings of sadness or anger, it may be to help you release pent up emotions and free up energy.
JA: What is sound healing? And how does sound actually heal?
SJ: When I do a healing session, the client and I become energetically supported in a sacred spiritual space. As I begin to work, the energy of the sound comes through, and I open myself up to receive the sound frequency and invite the healing energies to work through me. When combined with the setting of an energy healing it’s more effective than just using sound therapy by itself.
JA: What does a healing session with you consist of?
SJ: Before the actual healing session I have the client fill out an intake form, which I look over prior to their arrival. On the day of the healing I meditate to allow myself to open to the energies needed to support them. When the client arrives we talk for 10-15 minutes, in which I observe and feel into the subtle energies of the client and what is being presented in the moment. Clients then lie on a message table, fully clothed, and I proceed with the energy healing. It is never just energy or just sound, but a combination of both. I’m guided to what type of session the client needs, which always includes energy healing and I’m almost always guided to include sound. The energetic healing is hands-on healing; I practice a form of healing called Brennan Healing Science.
I work a lot with the chakra system of my client’s energy field. When guided to include sound healing, my intuition directs me where to go, what chakra points to spend more time on. The sounds are different for each chakra as well. If I’m working on the lower chakras the frequencies are lower; on the higher chakras, the tones are higher. I’m guided as to how long I need to stay in a particular area.
Using sound frequencies with the seven chakra points, I see them open and become clearer. I can then remove stagnant, blocked energy and balance the client’s field. The healing session helps energy to flow and results in greater coherence and more integrated energy, whereas before the client’s field may have been sluggish or misaligned.
JA: What type of healing sessions would benefit from sound healing?
SJ: Sound therapy can be used for any kind of physical and emotional issue. Migraines, bronchitis, knee injuries – anywhere there is blocked or stagnant energy in the body. I’ve had a great deal of success especially with easing physical ailments and speeding up the healing process.
JA: How do you suggest people work with you?
SJ: Even one session will help balance your energy. Depending on the person and circumstances, a series of sessions may be more effective. The sessions are a therapeutic process, which build on each other as more trust is built between therapist and client. As we work together we peel away layer after layer. Although people generally feel more relaxed, at peace and more rested after a session, because the energies take time to integrate, they continue to work over time, so the process of change or healing can seem subtle. The effect of an energy healing treatment can be felt days after, which is why I suggest, if possible, that clients take it easy for a period of time immediately after a session, or even for the rest of the day.
